Teamwork & Sunsets

So, I love sailboat racing because of the thrill of the ride, the spirit of competition, the teamwork…and the sunsets.

Come some cold, snowy, dreary January day, when I need a pick-me-up, I will remember last night’s Earl Smith Night Race.

First: the warm, southerly breeze and, second, omg, the sunset.

The sky and the water all around us turning so many stunning shades of orange and pink and purple.

I shot soooo many photos and none of them, not a single one, captured even half of the beauty.

The real beauty, is locked inside of my memory.

Great Lakes Woman Editor/Publisher Patti Samar on Good Lookin’ on September 12, 2026, on Lake Huron sailing in the Earl Smith Night Race organized by the Port Huron Yacht Club.

And our crew? Our captain was a boy, but the rest of the crew: three women.

Before the start, I asked the skipper who did he want doing what jobs on the starting line.

He just looked at me and said, “The three of you figure it out.”

And so we did.

(Women are soooo f—cking efficient!) ❤️⛵️

I went to the mast and hoisted the spinnaker while the other two prepared to trim it in the cockpit.

And the rest of the race went just like that.

No yelling.

Just chatter, making sure all jobs were covered whenever we needed to jibe or tack the boat, and excellent teamwork.

Teamwork really made the dream work last night…a magical night with a sky on fire and a mostly female crew just sailing, literally, into the sunset.

Thank you, Team Good Lookin, for a super fun night race.
